The Henna Wars
Adiba Jaigirdar
At her Catholic girls’ school in Dublin, Nishat is glad when Flávia, a student she met at a cousin’s wedding, enrolls. Nishat has recently told her Bangladeshi parents that she is lesbian, but they fear she will bring shame to the family. Flávia is related to Chyna, whose microaggressions and exclusion have targeted Nishat. A class project brings further conflict when Nishat starts a Mehndi business and Flávia and Chyna create a competing one. Henna art connects Nishat to cultural tradition.
