The First Blade of Sweetgrass: A Native American Story

Musqon joins her grandmother, Uhkomi, at a salt marsh to gather sweetgrass, a practice their family has continued across generations. Her grandmother teaches her to identify sweetgrass among other marsh grasses and explains its uses in ceremony and basket making. After initially picking the wrong plant, Musqon learns to recognize its scent and green blade. She is also taught to leave the first piece she finds, so that the family will never take the last one.
