The Field
Baptiste Paul
On Saint Lucia, a girl and her younger brother gather family, friends, and a fruit vendor for a pickup futbol game. The play continues despite cows wandering onto the field, rain, and calls from mothers as evening approaches. Only after the game ends do the children race home through the dusk. Creole words appear throughout the story, with a glossary at the end, alongside an author’s note about childhood futbol on the island.
