The Circles in the Sky
Karl James Mountford
Fox follows a chorus of birds through the forest after hearing an unfamiliar song each morning. In a meadow, he finds one bird on the ground, still and unresponsive. Fox does not understand death and cannot see why Bird will not accept food or sing with him. A moth arrives to explain Bird’s mortality, but Fox is confused and angry as he asks for the truth. The illustrations reveal what Fox cannot yet comprehend, including buried animal skeletons and shells beneath the earth. Seasonal imagery and geometric backdrops further echo the cycle of life and death.
