The Branch
Mireille Messier, illustrated by Pierre Pratt
A storm breaks a little girl’s favorite branch from a tree. Although her mother sees only a branch, the girl remembers it as a castle, spy base, and ship, and wants to keep it. Her neighbor Mr. Frank understands her disappointment and sees possibilities in the damaged wood. Together, they plan and carry out a workshop project involving measuring, sawing, drying, drilling, and varnishing. Their work turns the branch into a swing, giving it a new purpose.
