Twelve-year-old Ada is a kime, or chimera: a child born with animal genes and traits after a genetic experiment went wrong. Her exceptional vision lets her perceive more of the spectrum than ordinary human sight, and her scientist father has kept that ability hidden. When required genetic testing at school exposes her, authorities take her to a Long Island center for kime children. The facility offers protection from people who fear them, but it also confines them. There, Ada sees a blue light that seems intelligent and attempts to contact her.
