Stumpkin
Lucy Ruth Cummins, illustrated by Lucy Ruth Cummins
Outside a city shop, Stumpkin sits among a display of orange pumpkins waiting to be selected for Halloween. Unlike the others, he has no stem. As customers take home the other pumpkins, which later appear as jack-o’-lanterns in nearby apartment windows, Stumpkin remains behind. Even a gnarled yellow gourd is chosen before the shop closes on Halloween night. The story follows this stemless pumpkin’s uncertain place in the display and his relationship with the shopkeeper’s black cat.
