In 1945 California, nine-year-old Maria Singh is eager to join a new girls' softball team at her school. Her Sikh father reluctantly agrees, but Maria must also ask to wear shorts instead of a dress while playing. At practice, the girls encounter jeers from boys and conflicts over positions and racial tensions. Maria's father came from India through Mexico because of anti-Indian immigration laws, while her mother is Mexican American, placing family history alongside her determination to play.
