Spencer’s New Pet

Spencer’s new pet is a bright red balloon dog. He teaches it tricks, cuddles it, brings it to the veterinarian, and takes it to the park. When Spencer loses his grip on its leash, the balloon rises above the park and drifts into a birthday party. Told without words in three parts, the black-and-white illustrations reserve color for the balloon dog. As it moves through the park and party, sharp dangers appear: a dog’s tooth, an eagle’s talons, a carousel horn, candles, a piñata stick, and a game pin. Spencer retrieves the dog as it comes back down.
