Southwest Sunrise
Nikki Grimes
Jayden has recently left New York City for New Mexico and does not want to be there. On his first morning in the new home, he takes a field guide from his mother and goes outside. He encounters flowers, birds in piñon trees, adobe houses, bones in sand, and a broad blue sky. Jayden misses skyscrapers but notices distant red-rock pillars that remind him of their height. He returns with flowers for his mother after seeing new possibilities in the landscape.
