Soul Food Sunday

Winsome Bingham

Every Sunday, a young Black boy’s aunts, uncles, and cousins gather for Soul Food Sunday. Instead of playing with his cousins, he joins Granny in the kitchen for the first time. She teaches him how to prepare parts of the meal, including grating cheese for macaroni and cheese, preparing greens, and getting chicken, ribs, and sausage ready for the grill. While Granny naps, the boy makes a jug of sweet tea on his own. The meal is shaped by family work and Sunday tradition.
