Somos como las nubes / We Are Like the Clouds
Jorge Argueta
This bilingual English- and Spanish-language poetry collection follows the experiences of children and young people leaving El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. The poems address departures driven by extreme poverty and fear of violence, and the hope of reaching a safe new home in the United States. One opening poem compares children and their dreams with clouds. Other poems move from images of neighborhood life in El Salvador to gang violence, long stretches of walking, travel on the train called la bestia, and a desert crossing. The collection speaks both through and toward the experiences of many children making these journeys.
