Skating Wild on an Inland Sea

Jean E. Pendziwol

A girl and her younger brother wake early to skate on a remote frozen bay of Lake Superior. After breakfast by the woodstove, they bundle up and walk through the woods, noticing sea smoke above the lake and tracks made by foxes, deer, hares, mink, and otters. At the shore, they put on skates and move across the wild ice. Beneath their feet, the lake makes sounds like distant thunder, cracking and rumbling. The story follows their winter outing from dawn through the sounds and signs of the natural world.
