Serendipity’s Footsteps

A pair of pale pink embroidered shoes connects stories set decades apart. In Berlin in 1938, Dayla, whose father is a Jewish cobbler, makes the shoes for a future wedding. In 2013, Ray and Pinney run away from a Texas group home. Pinney, whose full name is Chopine, is drawn to shoes and wants to reach New York after seeing an image of a tree filled with lost footwear; she believes the pink pair may be connected to her missing mother. Ray brings along the shoes after taking them from a thrift store, and the two girls travel together despite Ray’s reluctance.
