Saturday Morning at the ’Shop

A Black child spends a Saturday at the local barbershop while Mom goes to work. The shop is a gathering place where people listen to music, watch sports, trade jokes, sell goods, and talk about Black leaders and hip-hop. Its walls display portraits of Black heroes, and its barbers create haircuts as works of art. For the narrator, the barbershop is both a place for getting styled and a center of community life.
