Rani Patel in Full Effect

Set in early-1990s Hawaii, this story follows sixteen-year-old Rani, who lives with her Gujarati Indian immigrant parents. Her family life begins to unravel after she sees her father kissing a much younger woman and confronts the unhappiness and abuse within her home. Invited by her friend Pono to join a secret rap group, Rani finds an underground music community and uses rap to express anger and pain. Her relationship with the group’s older founder becomes abusive.
