Princess and the Peas

Rachel Himes

Ma Sally is known in her county for cooking black-eyed peas. She decides that any person her son John wants to marry must prepare peas as well as she can. Three women who admire John are poor cooks, but Princess, newly arrived in town, makes peas that impress Ma Sally. Princess is not certain she wants marriage, however. She says she has plans of her own, suggests dancing at the juke joint, and expects John to help wash the pots and pans.
