Popo the Xolo
Paloma Angelina Lopez, illustrated by Abraham Matias
Nana, an elderly woman surrounded by her family, begins her passage from life into death with Popo, her Xolo dog, at her side. After Nana dies, Popo accompanies her on a journey to Mictlān, drawing on Aztec mythology and Indigenous understandings from present-day Mexico. Nana’s family remembers the love they shared with her, and one of her grandchildren takes on Popo’s care.
