Poet: The Remarkable Story of George Moses Horton

George Moses Horton is born into slavery early in the nineteenth century and longs to read, though enslaved people are forbidden to do so. After finding an old spelling book, he teaches himself to sound out words and reads whatever he can find. He comes to love poetry, composing poems he must keep in his memory because he cannot write them down. Horton eventually becomes a published poet while still enslaved.
