Johnnie wants to mark her Papa’s birthday, but he cannot say exactly when he was born. As he tells her about his childhood and the life he made in Boley, Oklahoma, Johnnie begins to understand why. The town was all Black. Inspired by his story, she plans a different celebration for Papa: a party honoring his Father’s Day of freedom. The story is based on the author’s grandfather.
