Okra Stew: A Gullah Geechee Family Celebration
Natalie Daise
After Mama goes to work and Big Sis leaves for school, Bobo spends the day making okra stew with his father. They gather vegetables from the garden, Papa catches shrimp, and Bobo collects shells. In the kitchen they prepare vegetables and seasonings, add shrimp, and bake cornbread. Papa tells Bobo he learned the dish from his own father, and the family later eats the meal together, continuing a Gullah Geechee tradition.
