Ojiichan’s Gift

Chieri Uegaki

Every summer, Mayumi travels to Japan to spend two months with her grandfather and help tend the rock garden he created when she was born. She gathers small keepsakes from their time together, including leaves, pinecones, and a stone. On a later visit, her grandfather uses a wheelchair and cannot look after the neglected garden. Mayumi directs her upset feelings at the garden before forming an idea that renews her connection to both the place and her grandfather. The story follows the memories and care they share across change.
