Not Your All-American Girl
Madelyn Rosenberg, Wendy Wan-Long Shang
Sixth grader Lauren and her longtime best friend Tara audition for their school musical, “Shake It Up!” Lauren performs strongly, but Tara receives the leading role. Their teacher explains that blonde Tara fits the role of the “all-American girl,” making Lauren question the implication for her as a dark-haired, biracial Chinese American Jewish girl. Set amid details of the 1980s, the story follows Lauren as she becomes increasingly upset by the racist ideas behind the teacher’s understanding of who can represent an all-American lead.
