During a thunderstorm power outage, Roger hides beneath a blanket with his great-aunt Rachel Carson. After the weather clears, Rachel invites him outdoors with a lantern. They travel through the woods to the shore while Roger tries to seem fearless by acting like a monster. At the water, the glowing ocean catches his attention, and he helps Rachel free a firefly from the water. The fictionalized tale draws on events Carson recounted and follows Roger as wonder begins to replace fear.
