Sixteen-year-old Haitian American Nigeria Jones was raised in her father’s insular Black Power Movement and vegan homeschool commune. After her mother’s death, Nigeria begins pushing against its restrictions. Learning that her mother had supported her attending Philadelphia’s Quaker prep school, where she has a scholarship, Nigeria chooses to go. At school she encounters new perspectives, challenges her father’s authority, and forms relationships while reconsidering her parents’ history and her own identity.
