Nature’s Friend: The Gwen Frostic Story

Lindsey McDivitt, illustrated by Eileen Ryan Ewen

Born in Michigan in 1906, Gwen Frostic grows up drawn to art and the outdoors. An illness leaves her with weak hands and slurred speech, but her mother supports her education and supplies her with art materials. Frostic studies mechanical drawing, printmaking, and metalwork, and designs tools for bomber production during World War II. She later founds a stationery company in northern Michigan, creating work inspired by her observations of wetlands.
