My Mother Was a Nanny

A Black child describes her mother through the many kinds of work she does during the week. She cares for other children, shops for food, bakes bread, prepares a wedding dress and cake, and cleans offices. The mother also listens to friends and relatives and makes time for her own daughters. As the narrator remembers these roles, the story shows that her mother’s busy life includes attention and handmade Easter dresses for her children.
