Cuban American Merci Suárez begins eighth grade with longtime friends Hanna and Leah, newer friend Edna, and uncertain feelings for Wilson. At home, her close extended family is adapting as her grandfather Lolo’s Alzheimer’s progresses and he requires more help than the family can provide. Merci is also troubled when the father of her twin nephews suddenly becomes part of their lives after her aunt asks him to take responsibility, and the boys are drawn to him.
