Maya’s Blanket/La manta de Maya
Monica Brown
Maya treasures the blanket her grandmother made for her. As its edges wear out, the two reshape it repeatedly: first into a dress, then a skirt, shawl, scarf, headband, and bookmark. After Maya loses the bookmark, she records the blanket’s story in writing. When she has a daughter of her own, Maya shares that story with her. Based on a traditional Yiddish song, the bilingual tale blends English and Spanish words within a Latino cultural setting.
