Martí’s Song for Freedom = Martí y sus versos por la libertad. Versos sencillos
Emma Otheguy
This bilingual verse biography follows José Martí, a Cuban poet and political revolutionary who worked for Cuba’s independence from Spain. After witnessing slavery on his home island as a young man, he committed himself to helping enslaved people. During the Ten Years’ War, his political writing resulted in imprisonment and exile, yet he continued to argue for independence while traveling among countries. After several years in New York, Martí returned to Cuba as a soldier in the War for Independence and died in battle. The narrative includes lines from his Versos sencillos.
