In this memoir, Melba Pattillo Beals recounts her childhood and the experiences that shaped her activism. Growing up under Jim Crow laws in the South, she confronted rules that treated Black people as lesser and often felt unsafe beyond her home and neighborhood. Beals describes painful violence against members of her community as well as the support she received from family. As a teenager, she became one of the Little Rock Nine, who enrolled at Little Rock Central High School in 1957.
