During the Freedom Rides, Lewis is beaten and jailed, experiences that deepen his political commitment. He later takes a leadership role in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee as protests intensify in Birmingham. The book covers his work planning the 1963 March on Washington and revising his speech, and concludes with the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing that killed four girls. Black-and-white panel art accompanies the account.
