This art puzzle book uses Xu Bing’s Square Word Calligraphy, a writing system made from Roman letters arranged to resemble Chinese calligraphy. It presents transliterated lyrics from several American folk songs and five Chinese children’s songs. Detailed illustrations provide visual clues that help readers decode each song. What initially appears unreadable can be worked out through the images and the letter-based code. The book combines songs, visual art, and word puzzles built around this invented calligraphic system.
