Patches, a small calico cat, loves the girl she lives with but feels compelled to find a particular place. She slips through a damaged screen and becomes lost only a few blocks from home. Drawn to a doghouse, she ignores warnings about its owner, Gus, and has three kittens there. Gus proves lonely rather than frightening, but Patches remains determined to take her kittens home. The story is told in short verse lines.
