It examines servitude affecting Cubans of Chinese and African descent. Antonio Chuffat, a free thirteen-year-old Afro-Cuban-Chinese boy based on a real person, works for a Chinese man and writes letters to newspapers and influential people in China. The letters protest the agreement that brought Chinese people into servitude in Cuba. Antonio also meets Wing and Fan, fictional siblings whose family arrived from California.
