Lymon is raised by his grandparents in Vicksburg, Mississippi, while his father is incarcerated. After his grandfather dies, relatives move Lymon and his grandmother to Milwaukee. When his father is released, Lymon hopes they will finally live together, but his father repeatedly leaves for musical work. As his grandmother’s health worsens, Lymon goes to Chicago to live with his mother, younger half-brothers, and stepfather. Spanning 1938 to 1947, the story follows his anger and sadness through years of abandonment and physical abuse.
