Learning to Breathe

Sixteen-year-old Black Bahamian Indy has largely been raised by her grandmother because her mother’s drug addiction has made home unstable. After moving to Nassau to live with an aunt, Indy is raped by her cousin Gary and conceals the resulting pregnancy because she fears being expelled from the home. Isolated and struggling at school, she finds a yoga retreat where local staff offer kindness and support. The novel follows Indy as she faces trauma, seeks safety and belonging, and begins to accept help.
