Kate’s Light: Kate Walker at Robbins Reef Lighthouse
Elizabeth Spires, illustrated by Emily Arnold McCully
This nonfiction picture book recounts Kate Walker’s years at Robbins Reef Lighthouse in New York Bay. After emigrating from Germany with her son, she joined her husband at the lighthouse, first serving as an assistant keeper. Following his death, she became its temporary keeper and later its permanent keeper. The account includes the everyday demands of tending the lamp and maintaining records, alongside storms and rescues. Watercolor and pen-and-ink art depicts Kate climbing from a boat, working at the lighthouse, and rowing through a storm.
