This nonfiction account documents Irena Sendler’s work with the underground movement in Warsaw during World War II. Sendler and others help save 2,500 Jewish children from Nazi persecution, many from the Warsaw Ghetto. The narrative follows their efforts in chronological order and also introduces several of the people who work alongside Irena, including Jewish participants. Many children are placed with Polish Christian families. The book concludes by following the later fates of Irena and key collaborators and includes an adapter’s note and endnotes.
