Biosphere 2, located in Arizona’s desert, began as a 1990s experiment in which eight scientists lived inside, grew food, and studied ecosystems and human survival. The book also examines the facility’s later research in controlled biosystems. Scientists investigate how rainforest trees respond to drought and carbon dioxide, how rock becomes soil, and how water travels through a watershed. Other work explores solar-panel underlayment and water-capture systems.
