Through two timelines, the novel follows Myung-gi in northern Korea after the Soviet occupation and, years later, as a sixteen-year-old ROKA soldier trapped beneath a collapsed tunnel in 1952. At nine, he lives with his parents and sister as Communist rule becomes increasingly restrictive and war begins. His father secretly prepares the family’s flight south, but North Korean soldiers seize him when Myung-gi is distracted while keeping watch. Myung-gi, his mother, and sister then undertake a dangerous journey, hoping to find him again in Busan.
