In My Anaana’s Amautik

A young child describes the comfort of riding in Anaana’s amautik, the pouch on the back of a parka used by Inuit women to carry children. The child compares the amautik and mother’s presence to parts of the natural world: fleecy clouds, cottongrass, sunshine, a stream, and ocean waves. Nestled in the pouch, the child feels protected, loved, and at home while taking in the warmth, scent, laughter, and breathing of their mother.
