When Aaliyah turns eighteen, she contacts the parents she has never known, despite the objections of Grandpa Joe, who raised her. Her decision strains her relationship with Joe and with her cousin and best friend, Ivy. After Joe has a stroke, Aaliyah feels isolated and turns toward Lena and Quincy, who say they want a relationship with her. Their efforts prove complicated, and Aaliyah learns that both have withheld important information about her past.
