Home for a While
Lauren H Kerstein, illustrated by Natalia Moore
Calvin arrives at a new foster home with Maggie after having lived in other foster homes. Expecting not to stay long, he is angry and breaks things. Maggie makes clear when she is upset, then breathes with him and offers ways to redirect his anger. At bedtime, she asks whether she may hug him, and he refuses. Over time, her explanations for wanting to hug him name strengths she has noticed in him. Calvin slowly begins to trust her and eventually asks for a goodnight hug.
