On a spring day in Paris, Alice Babette expects birthday surprises but feels disappointed when her friend Gertrude does not even offer a greeting. Alice wanders around the city by herself while Gertrude attempts to prepare a surprise meal and compose a poem about a rose. Gertrude cannot cook and loses track of time, leaving a mess at home. Later, she reads the poem aloud, and Alice loves it. The imagined story features Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein.
