Lines, Squiggles, Letters, Words

Pedro lives in a large city and notices signs everywhere, though at first their writing appears to him as lines and odd squiggles rather than meaningful language. After beginning school and learning to read, he starts recognizing individual letters on the signs, first an A and then a D. His understanding develops gradually until he can read complete words. The illustrations continue to show the signs as Pedro sees them, allowing readers to follow his changing perception of written language.
