This biography follows Gordon Parks from childhood through his work as a photographer. As a young person, Parks held jobs including porter and waiter before buying a used camera at age twenty-five. He photographed Ella Watson, a Black cleaner in his Washington, D.C., office building, creating the image “American Gothic.” Parks later became the first Black photographer for publications including Vogue and Life, and also wrote poetry and music.
