Give Me Some Truth
Eric Gansworth
In 1980, Carson Mastick and Lewis Blake live on the Tuscarora Reservation in New York's upstate region, where they are high-school seniors. Fifteen-year-old Maggi Bokoni returns with Marie, her older sister, to the reservation. Once an honor student, Lewis's confrontation with a white bully at school leaves his future unclear; he cleans buses for the school district. Maggi works there too, meeting a grounds supervisor who seems to understand her ambition to create art outside traditional beadwork. Carson assembles a band for a competition: Maggi plays water drum, and Lewis reluctantly takes bass.
