Giant Rays of Hope: Protecting Manta Rays to Safeguard the Sea
Patricia Newman
This book chronicles Peruvian conservation leader Kerstin Forsberg’s work to protect giant manta rays. As a child, Forsberg formed a school club to encourage interest in a small zoo and later published a story about ocean contamination. After college, work with fishermen in northern Peru strengthened her belief that conservation requires community involvement. Her organization, Planeta Oceano, works with schoolchildren and fishermen to build awareness of manta rays and their role in ocean health. The book describes how protecting rays can also support fishing and the local economy.
