After Lizzie’s parents gain freedom from slavery, she and her brother Paul begin attending a new school for African American children. Their mother links freedom with learning arithmetic and writing. The children walk a long distance to a one-room schoolhouse taught by an African American woman, facing bad weather and harassment from white boys. When the school is burned down, Lizzie and Paul keep practicing reading and writing at home. Later, their teacher resumes lessons outdoors on the school’s former site.
